A delightful picture of Prince William beaming while surrounded by his three children on holiday in Jordan in Autumn 2021 was chosen by the family for the occasion. “To mark Father’s Day tomorrow, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to share a new photograph of The Duke, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis,” Kensington Palace said in a short statement accompanying the release of the image this evening.
The Cambridges holidayed in Jordan during the Autumn term half-term break from school and chose an image from the holiday to release for their Christmas card last year. This latest picture was clearly taken on the same day, with William and his children wearing the same outfits. However, while the family was smiling politely for the picture chosen for their Christmas card, this image is much more informal, showing the children laughing while Louis sits on his dad’s shoulders.
The photograph echoes other portraits previously released by Kensington Palace to mark Father’s Day. In 2020, pictures showing the Cambridge children climbing on William’s back and sitting on a swing with him were issued. And this time last year the couple posted an informal behind the scenes moment on their social media (which was apparently taken ahead of 2019’s Trooping the Colour) showing William hugging his children in his military uniform.
The Duchess of Cambridge used to live in Amman, Jordan as a little girl between 1984 and 1986 while her father Michael Middleton was located there with his work. A photograph of her with her father and younger sister Pippa at Roman ruins in Jerash was released by the Palace ahead of her 2011 wedding.
