  • Cher, 76, says she’s not old enough to have earned the title of “icon.”
  • “In my mind, an icon has always got to be old to be iconic. I can’t think [I’m] old yet,” she said.
  • Below, the singer shares who her personal icons are.

True icon energy is to humbly reject the honor of such a title, and that’s exactly what Cher just did. In a new interview with Allure, the fashion legend was asked to break down her most “iconic” looks from the last four decades, and before she could get into that, she had to make a correction. In her opinion, at 76, she’s not old enough to be an icon.

“In my mind, an icon has always got to be old to be iconic. I can’t think [I’m] old yet,” she said frankly. Mind you, this is hardly the first time anyone has given her such praise. “It’s fun,” she admitted. “But I don’t take it seriously because… does it mean you’ve just lasted longer than everybody else?”

In Cher’s opinion, those who do meet icon status are Tina Turner, who is 82, and her mom, who’s 96. “My mom gets up and she puts her lipstick on and does her hair… my mom is beautiful and even now, [she’s got] this amazing skin. She’s a pain in the ass—and the hair, you cannot believe her hair,” she explained. “So my mom’s an icon to me, and nobody else knows it, but I know it.”

No matter what the entertainer’s definition of the term may be, it’s hard to argue with someone who has made such waves in pop culture, and continues to despite her age. For example, she’s currently promoting the launch of her perfume line’s decades-inspired fragrances, and she recently made a jaw-dropping cameo at Paris Fashion Week, closing the Balmain runway show in a skintight reflective black bodysuit (with statement shoulders) and matching leggings. The “Believe” singer’s signature black hair, of course, completed the look.

In addition to her self-proclaimed icon-less status, Cher’s hair is another attribute that keeps her young. In January, she told People she’ll never go gray. “[Going gray] is fine for other girls,” she said. “I’m just not doing it!”

She’d much rather temporarily change her look with wigs. And bold makeup and clothes, of course—two more things she’ll never outgrow. “You know what? You never stop being a girl,” she told People. “If you never stop being a girl, you’ll never get old.”

Sorry to tell the star, but her latest comments just made her more of an icon in our book.
